How to Clean Out Your Home Before Decorating for the Holidays

Why Decluttering Is Essential Before Cluttering

The holidays are filled with decorations. It's a smart idea to declutter your home before you put away your streamers, trees, lights, and garlands. A clean space makes decorating easier and more enjoyable. The last thing you want is to stress and move around all of your items to put up decorations. This makes you appreciate the items you choose to display. By decluttering first, you'll avoid the feeling that comes with putting decorations on top of everyday clutter. Instead, you'll create a blank canvas.

Where to Start Decluttering First

Start with the spaces you spend most of your time in at home.

  • Door Entrance: This space will be the first thing you see when you come home, so having this space cleared out brings the room together. Make sure your shoes, mail, and furniture are cleared out before decorating.
  • Kitchen: Remove items you no longer use from the counters, cabinets, and pantry. This could be old food that needs to be discarded, worn-out cutting boards, or knives you no longer use.
  • Guest Bedrooms and Closets: Clean up guest spaces. Go into the guest closet and remove coats, luggage, or extra bedding.

How To Declutter

Step 1: Sort Out Your Items

Go room by room and identify items you want to keep, donate, or throw out. If an item has been in use for six months or more, you will generally not use it again.

Step 2: Store or Donate

Move off-season clothing, gear, or decor into bins. Label items clearly and decide what should go into storage versus what can be donated.

Step 3: Clean As You Go

Wipe down surfaces, vacuum floors, and dust shelves while decluttering. This gives your holiday decorations a fresh, clean stage.

Step 4: Clean Out Areas You'll Be Decorating

You will most likely know what specific areas you'll be decorating. Clean out places like the entry table, front door, and stairway.. Make space ahead of time by clearing what's currently there.

What to Keep

During the holiday season, not everything needs to stay in your home.

Keep out: Items you use daily, cozy winter gear, and neutral furniture.

Put in storage: Everyday decor, extra furniture, off-season clothes, outdoor summer gear, hobby supplies, and even kids' toys to make room for gifts.

At StorPlace Self Storage on Campbell Ln, we make it easy to rotate these items in and out as needed.

Using a Storage Unit To Help

A storage unit is an innovative solution when you don't want to throw things out or donate them. It lets you declutter effectively without tossing valuable or sentimental belongings. Plus, it's the perfect place to store the items you want to declutter once the season ends:

  • Furniture that makes space for a tree
  • Summer gear that clutters garages or closets
  • Non-holiday decor that gets swapped out seasonally
