StorPlace Self Storage: Sound Management Practices

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Well here we are again. Another year has come and gone. As I look back on the past year, I have to stop and take a minute to reminisce. I sit here wondering where the year went and how and the heck it went by so fast. A lot of good things have happened for me this past year, the most important thing being a very well deserved promotion. I have finally been given the opportunity to show my fellow co workers what I can do as a property manager. I don’t want to sound conceited, but I do always work hard and try to give 110% to everything that I do. I think this can be said about each and every StorPlace Self Storage manager.

We all take great pride in what we do and how our properties look. I think I can speak for everyone when I say we hope that pride can be seen by our current and future tenants alike. And I can’t forget to mention all the pedestrians when they drive by or come onto the self storage facilities each one of us manages that they comment on how manicured and well kept and secure the property looks. We all like to operate a well maintained and clean facility. We like to keep all the light bulbs changed and lit and want to make sure the hallways are always kept up by keeping them swept and litter free. I just recently brought my leaf blower from home and blew off the property one pile of leaves at a time. I know it sounds like a big job, but the payoff was well worth it. The property looks great.

We always keep the bathrooms nice and clean as well as our offices. I personally will pick up trash as I do the lock check by stuffing it into my pockets. That’s one reason I wear cargo pants all the time, in case anyone was wondering.  Sometimes when I get back to the office my pockets are bulging out from the trash I’ve collected, although that’s a very rare occasion. All of our tenants are very tidy for the most part and also do their share to keep the property clean by disposing of their trash properly. I guess you can say they too take pride in the property where they rent.

Another great thing we all like to do is keep our merchandise well stocked. You are always going to find just about any moving or packing supplies you may need at any StorPlace Self Storage facility. You will always find plenty of moving boxes in a nice variety of sizes too.

So, I guess in a nutshell what I’ve been trying to say is, if you want find a well lit, clean, and well organized, and stocked with all the moving boxes and packing supplies you could need storage facility,

StorPlace Self Storage is the place.

Also, you will find StorPlace Self Storage to be your friendly self storage facility. All our managers realize that moving can be stressful, whether for a happy or sad occasion. Their number one concern is helping relieve the stress and helping you find the storage unit that best fits your needs.

StorPlace: It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas Part II

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

As we hustle about this Holiday season on the hunt for good prices and great sales on that perfect gift small problems may arise. If you have small children, keeping the gifts tucked away safe and sound until Christmas morning is not much of a problem. However, if you have older children who have found all of your hiding places or a spouse that has a hard time waiting until the big day to get their wish list filled, StorPlace Self Storage can help.

Many properties run a special we call ‘Santa’s Closet.’ It’s like a mini storage closet for Santa’s helpers. Now, while the big man is not on the payroll here, we like to help him out during this season by offering all of his helpers a break on a unit that is just the right size to keep prying eyes and curious souls from ruining the surprise of Christmas morning. Now whether you celebrate Kwanza, Hanukah, the Solstice, or Christmas, if you need a place to stash that 64” LCD HDTV for a couple weeks or those new bikes, we have got the space for you.  Surprise them with that new recliner or go ahead and grab that Curio Cabinet. We have short term rentals and month to moth leases, so we can help you hide whatever you have and it will be worth the memory of their face when they wake on Christmas morning.

StorPlace is committed to giving back to the community and assisting our tenants as if they were our neighbors or family. The Santa’s Closet is just one way we can help out during the holidays that can be so stressful for so many. Another way we assist our neighbors is we offer short term rentals, as short term as 2 weeks.

Do you have friends and family coming in for the Holidays? Do you have enough room in your home to accommodate them? Take a day or two to clean out that spare room. Move some furniture form the den so you can rent a few sleeper sofas and make this a holiday of togetherness and fellowship instead of reservations and hotels. Bring the joy of the season into your home by making a little room to keep everyone together and enjoying each other for this brief time we have each year to slow down and appreciate our blessings.

Bring whatever you need to our secure facility. Ten minutes of your time will get you a space for a few weeks to clear out some clutter and usher in the family and the Holidays. Our Temperature controlled spaces will make sure your belongings are happy for their brief stay with us and with our month to month lease and short term rental option, you save money by not getting locked into anything time binding.

So take advantage of having all of your loved ones here this year and make room to keep them close, for as long as you can. Renting Storage from StorPlace Self Storage during a Recession

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

There are lots of reasons for people to rent storage, but now we are stumbling upon a time that not many people in this great nation have experienced before and it is creating a new need for storage. If you haven’t noticed we are in a recession. Times are really tough for many people. We have people losing their homes and it is due to rising adjustable rate mortgages and due to job loses. These people, at least a large number of them, have never experienced this before and don’t really know what to do. The best guess is that they will be moving in with family and they have to put their belongings somewhere. Most of them will be needing storage. At StorPlace Self Storage you will receive a friendly staff member who is eager to make your experience with storage as stress free as possible. Another possibility is that they will be moving to a smaller apartment and will need a place to store their lawn furniture, lawn equipment and mower etc. that they no longer have a need for at their new home. People don’t want to get rid of these items as hopefully this recession will pass and one day they will be able to move back into a nice house to call their own.

It’s not just home owners that are moving right now it is also apartment tenants. As people move out of their apartments and move in with family due to this very trying time, the tenants who stay are feeling a rise in rent rates. As the apartment management struggles to keep their head above water, they may have to make a very difficult decision to raise rates. For some people this is just an inconvenience, but for others this may mean they have to downsize to a smaller apartment. If that is the case they may have a need to sell that furniture out of that extra bedroom. But what if you just can’t part with that furniture? Or you are hoping that as times get better you may be able to move into back into that larger apartment. This may be a good time to take a look at your budget and decide if you can some of the money you are saving from downsizing the apartment and put it towards a small storage unit or storage closet or use mini storage.  You may find that in comparison to what you were spending on that extra bedroom, a storage unit may sound like a cost effective solution to the problem.

This downturn in the economy is not just affecting individuals it is affecting small and large businesses alike. That huge warehouse that your business is currently renting to store all that extra product may be extremely convenient but it is also making a huge dent in your revenue. A good solution to this is to bring all of that stock to StorPlace of Medical Center. At StorPlace you can have 24 Hr access to your product and you may find that is just a convenient as that big expensive warehouse.  You may also find some benefits of having you product in a storage unit. For example, the security of a gated property and security cameras and the fact that you can also set up a different gate code for each employee so that you can keep track of your employees coming and going. It is as simple as stopping in at the StorPlace office and getting a print out of times that your employee’s codes are used to enter and exit the property. Just call and speak with a StorPlace Manager about the benefits of storing your products with us.

Whatever your situation, whether you are a small business owner or just an individual going through rough times the important things in life are starting to really show up. You may find that you don’t need that big fancy house to be happy and maybe moving back in with family makes you realize how important it is to have family and friends. If you are a business owner, this is the perfect time to maybe find a new cost effective way to run your business. Whatever the situation is StorPlace of Medical Center is always here to help.

Please come visit us at 1615 Charlotte Road, Nashville, TN 37203, or you can call us at 615-321-0400.

StorPlace Self Storage Offers Covered Parking

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

While the economy is still in a down turn, we find ourselves instead of discarding our belongings realizing it is to our advantage to maintain them. We take our vehicles to the repair shop instead of replacing them. After we put our hard earned dollars into then, we must have a safe place to have them stored. Now while this is only one scenario, maybe we are on the other end of the spectrum. Recreational vehicles and boat prices are now at an all time low. If we have the money to spend, why not purchase that long desired vehicle such as a Recreational Vehicle, Boat, Motor Cycle, Jet Ski etc. Many people reason, “If I can afford it, now is the time to purchase it, and after I buy it, where will I store it?” StorPlace Self Storage offers both covered and uncovered parking spaces at a reasonable price. StorPlace Self Storage provides state of the art digital surveillance equipment for the protection of your vehicles. The property is fully secure with a gated, keypad access. Only the owner has the code to get in. The properties are very well lit to insure safety and security. The lots are very well maintained so that there will be no damage to your property.

While the gate can be accessed from 6 am to 10 pm, longer access is available to those with recreational vehicles needing to get in and out.

You might ask yourself “Why do I need off site parking”? One problem that we will have to worry about is the lack of space at our current living situation. Many homeowners have downsized. The ever popular condominiums, zero lot lines, townhomes, and apartment complexes many times will allow you only two parking spaces. We need not mention the families that have found it necessary to share their home with relatives.  Households in the United States on average have 2.28 vehicles, and that was based on single households. Where will they put any extra Cars/ RVs /Boats?

Another reason to consider Self Storage for your extra vehicle is the price.  Recreation vehicles range from approximately $6000.00 to well above $500.000.00.  Investments such as these are well worth protecting, not to with a manager living on property and where there is 24 hour site surveillance.

A benefit of covered parking is the extreme weather Nashville, Tennessee, and Middle Tn., Nashville experiences from time to time such as the tornados we have had in the past.  So if you don’t have a safe, secure location for your extra vehicle please come by one of StorPlace Self Storage’ s  facilities and check out our covered and non covered  outside  parking. We also offer inside parking which is fully covered and locked with a door and a lock and key.

Three StorPlace Self Storage  Centers in Nashville/Hermitage now  have state of the art Covered RV Parking; Storplace Self Storage on Old Hickory Blvd. at Nolensville Rd., Storplace Self Storage on Murfreesboro Rd. , both conveniently located in Nashville, TN. and Storplace Self Storage in Hermitage, Tennessee.

Our other facilities have inside covered parking and outside parking. Come visit us at 14985 Old Hickory Blvd, Nashville, TN 37211, or you can call ust at 615-832-3388.

StorPlace Self Storage Is Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas Part I

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Stores already have Christmas décor hanging outside and inside on the show floor for sale. Some stores have already posted online their sales flyers for “black Friday” for consumers to view and start making their day after Thanksgiving shopping plan.  Now the dilemma is once you buy all those presents for your family where in the world do you put them?

Simple solution, a self storage unit. A self storage unit is a safe and secure place to keep all your holiday purchases until its time to wrap them and set them under the tree.  Around this time of year, space in the house is at a premium. With all the extra holiday decorations around the house taking up extra space, not to mention friends and relatives who may be staying in a spare bedroom or even on the couch, save yourself a little space and use a storage unit to keep the gifts.

Every year it is a scramble to find good hiding places around the house and the larger the gift the more difficult it is to find a place to hide it. Do not risk accident or injury trying to lug a toolbox for your spouse or a 20” bike up a flight of narrow, rickety attic stairs. In the alternative, small items can be very easily lost in the entire holiday shuffle. Remember the scene in the movie Christmas Vacation where Clark Griswold finds a wrapped gift in the attic from who knows how many years before covered in dust and cobwebs? With all the activities and hurry of the holidays it is very easy to forget where in the house you’ve stashed different items and inevitably, something gets forgotten or lost till it’s found sometime the next year when you’re spring cleaning your closet. Save yourself the hassle and the stress. Rent a mini storage unit for the holidays and that way all items big and small will be in one convenient place easy to get to and no frantic searching on Christmas Eve for the one gift you know you put in a safe place but just cannot remember where that is.

Storplace Self Storage will be happy to lease a storage unit in any size you need. Most will find that a 5×10 unit is the perfect size to keep all your Christmas purchases hidden away from the prying eyes of curious children and/ or spouses.  While a 5X10 size unit will be more than adequate for most you may want to consider a little larger unit like a 10×10 size if you are going to be storing a large item. If you just need a small unit for wrapped presents, we even have 3 by 5 storage closets. Also take into consideration any toys or gifts that will need to be assembled. A larger unit would afford you the room to spread out a little, get organized and assemble the gifts inside the unit before taking them home. Think about how nice it would be to not have to be up until 3 am Christmas Eve trying to put together the kids’ new bike in the freezing cold garage.

As a special Christmas gift to you, our customers, many StorPlace Self Storage locations will have Christmas units at a special discount price just for use for the holiday season. Of course, if you should find that you want to keep the unit after the holidays are over you are more than welcome to continue renting the same unit or maybe even transfer to a larger or smaller size depending on your needs.  And if we can make one more helpful suggestion it would be to use the storage unit to store all those holiday decorations such as Christmas trees, wreaths, and inflatable Santa’s and reindeer till next year rolls around. StorPlace Self Storage rents from month to month; so you have the flexibility to pay for only the time that you nee the storage space.

Come by and visit our friendly storage consultants at our Hickory Hollow located at 5251 Mt. View Road, Antioch, TN 37013, or you can call us at 615-731-1331.

StorPlace Self Storage Provides Safety And Security As Well As Storage

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

It is very important to consider safety when moving, not only moving from a house or an apartment, but moving boxes or anything heavy.   That is why it is so important to use precautions when moving.  Moving is never fun, and you should consider your health in the process.  When moving heavy boxes around, whether into that new house or apartment, or into StorPlace Self Storage, use caution.  Here at StorPlace Self Storage, we try to make your moving chores as easy as possible.  One of our Middle Tennessee Nashville locations has trucks available for rent as well.  When renting that truck, we make available an appliance dolly at t no charge to help with the heaviest of things.  Then we offer a storage unit not far from where you need to go.  Then, once you get to the facility that you have chosen, there are always hand carts available for easy maneuvering.   You do not have to worry about carrying heavy boxes to your selected StorPlace Self Storage unit.  Just load up the cart and you’re on your way.

Another safety concern would be, does the facility have adequate lighting?  Are there security measures in place?  The answer to that would be yes.  At each one of our Nashville  Tennessee locations, each is well lit and has many surveillance cameras all throughout the properties.  Each location is secure with not only the lights and cameras, but each one is also gated.  The gates are too tall for anyone to climb over.  And besides, even if they were brave enough to try, they would be caught on camera.  Each one of our tenants has their own security code to get in the gate.  Not just anyone can get through the gates.  So, rest assured, once you are on one of our properties, you will be safe.  Your belongings will also be safe.  Each tenant receives a well secured lock with their unit. They are the only one who has a key to the lock. The tenant is the one who controls who has access to the units.

Speaking of safety, wouldn’t you like for your belongs to be safe as well? Preserve all those important documents or photos in one of our heated or cooled units.  These are also great for antiques or electronics as well.

When packing, try not to over pack your boxes.  StorPlace Self Storage has everything you need.  Small boxes to extra large moving boxes, bubble wrap, dish pack kits, tape even box kits to help save you money.  Make sure to pack your heavier items into smaller boxes so you don’t over load a box while it is on the floor and then try to pick it up only to discover that you can’t because it is too heavy.  For the larger boxes, these are great for pillows, comforters, and blankets and such.  Believe it or not, the smaller the box, the heavier it can get.  Always lift with your legs and arms.  Never use your back.  Don’t risk a lifetime injury when moving.  It’s better to be safe than sorry.  Moving is stressful enough.  The last thing you need to worry about when moving is an injury that could have been prevented.  So, please keep these little hints in the back of your mind the next time you are packing and getting ready for that big move.

Visit one of our convenient locations near you or just pick up the phone and give us a call at 1-877-4storpl.  One of our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be more than willing to help you with any questions or concerns you may have. You can come visit us at 2156 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37217, or you can call us at 615-361-1000.

StorPlace Self Storage Helps You How to Choose a Self Storage Facility that is Right for You

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

How do you choose the right self storage facility depends on your current needs. Are you a business looking to store some inventory or how about a vehicle? Are you going to storing items for personal use or maybe a family member’s possessions that has recently passed away? Whatever the reason for needing storage, there is a storage facility out there just right for your needs.

Let’s start with the concerns that most people have about storage. Number one you want your belongings to be safe and you want yourself to be safe while you are at the facility. Check out what type of security the facility has. Does it have enough lighting to make sure you are not going to be left in the dark after the sun goes down? You want to make sure that the storage facility extremely bright outside lighting, as bright as an airport runway if possible. Extremely bright lighting also tends to run off any type of criminal activity. You also want to make sure that the facility has security cameras and make sure that they are recording 24hrs a day. Gate access is another security concern. Make sure that the gate has shut off hrs i.e. 6am to 10pm; this is a very good security feature as only the tenants would know that the gate shuts off at a certain time. A criminal may be banking on the fact that they will be able to follow a tenant out of the property late in the evening but to their surprise they would be stuck on the property until the next morning. Another feature to notice about the gate is to make sure you have to have a code to get IN and OUT of the property. The biggest security feature is of course the staff, so get to know the employees well at you self storage facility as they are the ones who keep an eye out on the property.

Next topic to take a look at is the location of the storage facility. You do want to make sure that the storage facility is in a decent area and is going to serve your needs well. Storage of a company vehicle is a number one reason to look at the location and can save you a lot of money each day.  If your company is located on the outskirts of town then having a vehicle that only make trips or deliveries in town parked in town then it could save your company quite a bit of gas cost each and every day. Also it doesn’t make much since to have all of your business inventory located way outside of downtown if all of your deliveries are in town, if

this is the case then put your inventory in a storage unit in downtown and save that gas, wear and tear , and employee time of driving back and forth to get inventory. Besides having a business you may have personal reasons for the location of your storage unit for example do you want it near your home or work? Probably the location will matter on where you will be the most when you are accessing the unit.

Whatever your reason for the storage in the West End Vanderbilt area, or in the Nashville, Tn. there will be a Storplace Self Storage facility with the just the right location and features you are looking for. Please come visit us at 1615 Charlotte Road, Nashville, TN 37203, or you can call us at 615-321-0400.

StorPlace Self Storage: Green Building and Operations in Self-Storage: Environmentally Friendly Options

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

As the year for StorPlace Self Storage draws ever closer to the end, we here at StorPlace Self Storage are preparing to welcome a new location to the family as construction begins on our Hendersonville storage location located near Nashville, Tennessee. As we plan for our new facility and start thinking of our New Year’s Resolutions, there is one thing we should be doing now and not waiting for 2010 to begin. Making environmentally friendly, or green, choices should be a daily occurrence for us all.  Here are a few ways the Self Storage Industry is trying to do their part.

What We Can Do

When building a new self-storage—or even remodeling an older facility—there are a number green steps you can take. For instance, when installing new products, look for energy-efficient ones, including air conditioning units and lighting.

Another easy way to be green-friendly is being cognizant of not wasting material when building. “You also want to recycle as much of your waste as possible,” Plunkett says.

Artistic Builders places different types of containers at every jobsite to separate recyclable materials, such as metal, cardboard, wood carve and concrete. Recycled concrete can be grinded and used on roads and streets, Plunkett notes. You an also make money by recycling scrap metal. “Why throw that in a landfill when, with just a little more effort, you can actually make a few bucks and save natural resources,” he says.

Foam-panel walls in facilities with climate control save energy and, over time, could be a superior product, Brooker says. “The difference between a fiberglass wall and foam-panel insulation might cost you another 5 percent, but it’s going to pay for itself quickly.”

White-painted roofs are another way to keep buildings cooler. “Even if it’s not climate controlled, a white roof is going to cut down on the heat in those units,” Brooker says. If using a different color, opt for cool paint.

Another breakthrough is humidity control. “It can save you another 20 [percent] or 30 percent in energy costs because you’re not cooling damp air,” Brooker says.

When considering landscaping, look for native plants that require little water. Adding trees and shrubs to the parking lot increases oxygen in the atmosphere and reduces heat islands, Plunkett points out. Also, consider adding water-catching systems, which collect water from rooftops and divert it to plants and flowerbeds.

In fact, handling water runoff is one of six LEED  categories in which self-storage can participate, according to Brooker. Still, a major issue for self-storage developers is there simply aren’t enough products that meet LEED standards. American Buildings discovered this when looking for a LEED-certified skylight. “We’ve definitely got the horse in front of the cart,” Brooker says. “We’re ready to do it, but the products aren’t available yet.”

Self-storage owners using a PVDF coating rather than a bare galvanized finish on climate-controlled facilities can achieve savings of 50 percent or more on cooling costs. Here are some more advantages:

  • Considered the most energy-efficient coating system on the market
  • Reflects more of the sun’s rays to produce cooler indoor temperatures
  • Meets many Energy Star requirements
  • Can add to facility aesthetics
  • Generates lower environmental temperatures to help reduce smog
  • 100 percent recyclable
  • Increases fire-resistance
  • Complements other building products such as stucco or concrete
  • Maintains gloss and color
  • Comes in exceptional colors that stay true for years to come

When building or remodeling your self-storage facility, consider cool panels to reduce energy costs and save money.

Greening the Future

While there’s no question that green is here to stay, at what levels sustainability will impact the self-storage building is still being determined. One factor is government mandates. Developers, already accustomed to stringent building codes and city requirements, will soon face green requirements, too. Recently, legislation was passed, mandating that all self-storage buildings in 2010 be 25 percent more efficient. “Anytime a self-storage unit needs to be heated or cooled, these codes are going to apply,” Brooker says.

And while some may think small changes won’t make a difference, they need to think long term, Plunkett says. “There are developers out there who just don’t care. They’re going to continue to do that until someone makes them do it. They’re not looking at what kind of impact it has on the environment, if they’re being friendly to their community, city and country.”

Building green is not a trend or a marketing strategy for Artistic Builders, but a company mission, Plunkett says. “It’s the right thing to do as a partner with the community and in partnership with our environment. We’re committed to it.”

StorPlace Self Storage Says “Turn Up The Heat”

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

If you have items that you do not have room for in your home or office, you should consider temperature controlled self storage. Temperature control means that the temperature inside your storage unit is kept at a steady level. There are many reasons why you should go with a temperature controlled unit rather than one with no temperature  control.  Let’s examine the benefits of this type of storage.

First, it’s important to understand the effects of varying temperatures and humidity on your valuables. There are many different types of items that can become damaged if exposed to extreme temperatures or high levels of moisture. They include paper documents, leather, fur, pharmaceuticals, crystal, china, and so much more. If you’re going to pay money to store your items, you might as well make sure that those items are safe from damage. While a temperature controlled unit may cost a bit more than one that isn’t, imagine the cost you’d end up with if your treasured possessions were ruined.

There are some ways to make your self storage experience go as smoothly as possible. First, make sure you choose the proper size unit. A unit that is too small can be very cramped or not able to hold all your things, whereas a unit that is too large can be a waste of money. Once you’ve retained the right size unit, it’s time to attend to some security details. While most every self storage company offers some kind of security, you’ll still want to lock up your building with a heavy-duty lock. Once you’ve done that, it’s time to attend to packing and moving your items.

A little careful planning can go a long way towards proper organization of your temperature controlled self storage unit. Group similar items together in boxes, and similar boxes together in your storage unit. If you can afford it, go with clear plastic totes instead of plain cardboard so you can easily see the contents. When moving, bring your large items such as furniture in first, then place your moving boxes in. Valuables should go in the back, with less valuable items positioned in the front. Items that cannot be boxed should at least be covered with a sheet or plastic tarp. Even in a temperature-controlled unit, you’ll find that a great deal of dust can accumulate over time. Finally, check in on your unit now and then to dust your things off. This will keep them in prime condition, no matter how long you need storage.
