And there  are the outside tools we have to keep close so we can  take care of  everything  that needs to be done outside. So we  purchase  a lot of those supplies and then we need a large garage to store them in. Then we get too much in the garage and we need more space at home for the cars.

First let’s start out with the obvious your bed. First let’s get those sheets and blankets off and get them washed real well. Be sure to use the longest/ most heavily soiled settings on your washer to make sure you get the oils and dead skin out of the fabric. It might not be a bad idea to wash them twice. Next let’s get those mattresses covered up with some plastic. StorPlace Self Storage sells a wonder mattress cover that is available in every mattress size. These mattress covers will slide right on the mattress and another one will slide onto the box springs.  Make sure you tape up the end of the covers so that no dirt or water gets on the mattress during the move. The last thing you want to happen to the mattress is for it to get wet as it will not smell so fresh and it could possibly grow mold later on. So wrap those mattresses up tight. Next let’s move on to the head board and foot board. The best product for this is the shrink wrap that has been discussed in previous articles. This item can also be purchased at StorPlace and it comes it a two foot wide roll that can easily wrap all the furniture in a small to average size home.  Next take the frame of the bed and remove it from the head board and foot board and set it aside. Then wrap the shrink wrap all the around the head board so that no wood is exposed. This will stop a lot of possible damage to the wood during the move. Now do the same for the foot board. On to the frame, lay all the pieces of the frame close together and wrap them neatly with the shrink wrap to keep all the pieces together.

Next is the dresser. Take out the drawers one by one so that you do not get them mixed up and label them drawer 1/2/3 etc and label the moving boxes that the items are going into the same way. This will make the move much smoother when you get on the other side of the move. After you get the drawers emptied, then go ahead and again wrap the dresser just like you did the head board and foot board. This will hold the drawers closed so they fall out.  If the dresser has mirrors on it then  remove it and take two pieces of cardboard the same size as the mirror and put them on both sides and wrap it with the shrink wrap or you can buy a mirror box at StorPlace if it will fit into those size moving boxes.

Closets are next on the agenda and can be very easy to unload if you have the proper boxes. The best box to use is the wardrobe box .This box is nothing more than a stand up closet that is portable. All you have to do is just move the hanging clothes out of your closet and hang them right into the wardrobe box and you are done. As far as advance as possible  follow these steps:

1. Investigate moving options. Check the rates of at least three different moving companies. If you are being relocated for work, check with your employer to see if they will help cover your moving expenses.

2. Create a “moving file” to keep track of all your receipts, notes, and estimates.

3. If you have school age children arrange to have their school records transferred to the new school system.

4. Make a list of any friends, businesses, memberships and periodical subscriptions that will need to be notified of your address change.

5. Visit your local post office and pick up a moving packet and fill out the new address card and turn it in to the post office.

6. Begin in one room of the house and take inventory of items you want to keep and items you can discard. Make a list of items you want to keep and items that you do not want.  Plan a yard sale for the items you can sell or plan to donate unwanted items to a local charity. Some charities offer pick-up for large items such as furniture or appliances.

7. Plan to use up as much perishable food items from your pantry or freezer as possible to minimize waste from spoiled food when you move. You could also ask a friend or neighbor if they want any food items that you cannot transport.

                One of the most important things to consider is location. You don’t want to be dragging your belongings up stairs, or have to drive 10 miles just to get one thing.  One would be surprised by the amount of self-storage facilities that are out there, as well as how different each can be. 

                Once you pick a location, visiting the storage facility beforehand is highly recommended .You may even want to visit more than one!  When looking at properties, make sure they have a gated keypad entry, security cameras, and ease of access to the property.  Some storage facilities have a dumpster for their tenants to use, as well as other amenities like moving carts.  If you don’t like what you see, or feel as if your belongings won’t be well taken care of, you may want to visit another facility.  Storage facility operators also highly recommend looking at the space before you rent it.  Even though you may be able to picture the dimensions in your head, when you look at the space it helps you get a better idea of how your belongings will fit into the unit.  Also, the storage unit may not be in a convenient location. You can always ask the manager if there are other units available in that size in a more convenient location if you don’t like what you see. 

                The next thing you should consider is how long you will be storing your belongings. If you are planning on storing over the warm summer months, you may want to consider a unit that is heated and cooled.  This will save those precious items that are sensitive to the warm temperatures. Once you have all the lamps and knick knacks done, you will be able to start on the furniture. Let’s start with the end tables; most of them have glass on top.  So remove the glass and place it between two pieces of cardboard and wrap it with tape and then wrap it with bubble wrap. Once you get that completed, wrap the end table with shrink wrap. Shrink wrap works wonderful to keep the furniture protected and it will also keep any drawers shut. That brings us to a good point and that is to never and I do mean never put tape on your furniture to keep the draws shut as it will rip the finish right off the furniture.  The next items on the list are the couch and love seat. If they are a recliner couch or love seat, you may want to wrap the foot rest shut with shrink wrap and then place the couch covers over the couch and love seat and use tape to pull them tight. Self storage is a very good place to store precious items, especially in a climate controlled storage unit.

The final items to move in the living room are the entertainment center and TV. The entertainment center can be packed up pretty much the same way as the end tables. Just wrap it up with shrink wrap and make sure all the doors and draws are shut and secured with the shrink wrap. Before you take out all the wires to the TV, stereo, and game stations etc, label the wires so that you will know what wire goes where when you get to your new home. As far as the TV goes, it is a wise idea to save the box it came in when you bought it to move it in and also refer to your owner’s manual on how to move the TV. In 1797, a British publisher issued The Young Man’s Valentine Writer, which contained scores of suggested sentimental verses for the young lover unable to compose his own. Printers had already begun producing a limited number of cards with verses and sketches, called “mechanical valentines,” and a reduction in postal rates in the next century ushered in the less personal but easier practice of mailing valentines. That, in turn, made it possible for the first time to exchange cards anonymously, which is taken as the reason for the sudden appearance of racy verse in an era otherwise prudishly Victorian.

Paper Valentines being so popular in England in early 1800s, Valentines began to be assembled in factories. Fancy Valentines were made with real lace and ribbons, with paper lace introduced in mid 1800’s. The reinvention of Saint Valentine’s Day in the 1840s has been traced by Leigh Eric Schmidt. As a writer in Graham’s American Monthly observed in 1849, “Saint Valentine’s Day… is becoming, nay it has become, a national holyday.” In the United States, the first mass-produced valentines of embossed paper lace were produced and sold shortly after 1847 by Esther Howland (1828-1904) of Worcester, Massachusetts. Her father operated a large book and stationery store, but Howland took her inspiration from an English valentine she had received, so clearly the practice of sending Valentine’s cards had existed in England before it became popular in North America. The English practice of sending Valentine’s cards appears in Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mr. Harrison’s Confessions (published 1851). Since 2001, the Greeting Card Association has been giving an annual “Esther Howland Award for a Greeting Card Visionary.” The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that, in the US, men spend in average twice as much money as women.

Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The mid-nineteenth century Valentine’s Day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the United States to follow.

In the second half of the twentieth century, the practice of exchanging cards was extended to all manner of gifts in the United States, usually from a man to a woman. Such gifts typically include roses and chocolates packed in a red satin, heart-shaped box. In the 1980s, the diamond industry began to promote Valentine’s Day as an occasion for giving jewelry. The day has come to be associated with a generic platonic greeting of “Happy Valentine’s Day.” As a joke, Valentine’s Day is also referred to as “Singles Awareness Day.” In some North American elementary schools, children decorate classrooms, exchange cards, and eat sweets. The greeting cards of these students often mention what they appreciate about each other.

The rise of Internet popularity at the turn of the millennium is creating new traditions. Millions of people use, every year, digital means of creating and sending Valentine’s Day greeting messages such as e-cards, love coupons or printable greeting cards.

Lupercalia

Though popular modern sources link unspecified Greco-Roman February holidays alleged to be devoted to fertility and love to St Valentine’s Day, Professor Jack Oruch of the University of Kansas argued that prior to Chaucer, no links between the Saints named Valentinus and romantic love existed. In the ancient Athenian calendar the period between mid-January and mid-February was the month of Gamelion, dedicated to the sacred marriage of Zeus and Hera.

In Ancient Rome, Lupercalia, observed February 13 through 15, was an archaic rite connected to fertility. Lupercalia was a festival local to the city of Rome. The more general Festival of Juno Februa, meaning “Juno the purifier “or “the chaste Juno,” was celebrated on February 13-14. Pope Gelasius I (492-496) abolished Lupercalia.

It is a common opinion that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to Christianize celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia, and that a commemorative feast was established in 496 by Pope Gelasius I, of those “… whose names are justly reverenced among men, but whose acts are known only to God,” among whom was Valentine, was set for the useful day. Alternatively, William M. Green argues that the Catholic Church could not abolish the deeply rooted Lupercalia festival, so the church set aside a day to honor the Virgin Mary.

Chaucer’s love birds

While some claim the first recorded association of Valentine’s Day with romantic love is in Parlement of Foules (1382) by Geoffrey Chaucer this may be the result of misinterpretation. Chaucer wrote:

For this was on seynt Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.

This poem was written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. A treaty providing for a marriage was signed on May 2, 1381. (When they were married eight months later, he was 13 or 14, and she was 14.)

Readers have uncritically assumed that Chaucer was referring to February 14 as Valentine’s Day; however, mid-February is an unlikely time for birds to be mating in England. Henry Ansgar Kelly has pointed out that in the liturgical calendar, May 2 is the saints’ day for Valentine of Genoa. This St. Valentine was an early bishop of Genoa who died around AD 307.

Chaucer’s Parliament of Foules is set in a fictional context of an old tradition, but in fact there was no such tradition before Chaucer. The speculative explanation of sentimental customs, posing as historical fact, had their origins among eighteenth-century antiquaries, notably Alban Butler, the author of Butler’s Lives of Saints, and have been perpetuated even by respectable modern scholars. Most notably, “the idea that Valentine’s Day customs perpetuated those of the Roman Lupercalia has been accepted uncritically and repeated, in various forms, up to the present”

Medieval period and the English Renaissance

Using the language of the law courts for the rituals of courtly love, a “High Court of Love” was established in Paris on Valentine’s Day in 1400. The court dealt with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women. Judges were selected by women on the basis of a poetry reading. The earliest surviving valentine is a fifteenth-century rondeau written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his “valentined” wife, which commences.

First, you must choose which property will be most convenient.   Sometimes, a location is chosen because it may be near work, but mostly properties are chosen because they are close to your home. Although, some properties may have different availabilities or prices, you will want to choose the property that will be most convenient and meets your storage needs. For example, although a storage unit may be a few dollars less on the other side of town; you will not want to take the time to drive the distance every time you need to visit your unit. On the other hand, if you need a temperature controlled space for your belongings and the nearest property doesn‘t offer temperature control, then you may want to drive that extra mile or so to StorPlace Self Storage in order to meet those storage needs. Remember that your first priority is to protect your belongings.  After you have chosen which property would be the most convenient, the next step is to contact the property manager.

When you call StorPlace Self Storage, one of these things will happen.  The property manager may be unable to answer the phone because they are either out on the property or with a customer. In this case, a recording will ask you whether you would like to speak with someone at the call center or leave a message for the property manager. If you speak with someone at the call center, they can give you information on the property, the units, prices, and availability. They can also reserve a unit at that particular property for you for as little as $10.00, which will be credited towards your first month’s rent. Once the call ends, the representative sends an email to the property manager at StorPlace Self Storage with all the information they have regarding your inquiry. The manager will then follow-up with any questions they may have with you or just to make sure you have directions to the storage center.  If you like, you can skip the call center and simply leave a message for the property manager, and he/she will return your call as soon as possible. However, 99% of the time you call a store, the property manager will answer right away.  Speaking directly with the property manager is the best option because on-site managers know their property better than a call center, especially if any units have recently come available that the call center has not registered yet. Property managers may also run their own specials that are only offered if you call or come to the store personally.

Upon arriving at a StorPlace Self Storage property, you will be greeted by a friendly, helpful store manager.  He or she will be able to answer any additional questions or concerns you may have regarding storage.  Once the property manager shows you the unit that was reserved, you will be the best judge as to whether your belongings will fit into that space. If, however, during the move you notice that the unit is too small or too large, contact the property manger and he/she will be able to offer a unit that is larger or smaller to accommodate your storage needs.

In trying to save money, a lot of people try to get used boxes from nearby stores instead of investing in new ones. It is important to remember that used boxes can and may attract bugs. They may have contaminated food and the scent still remains in the box. They are also not as sturdy and thick. Boxes come in many different sizes. You are certain to find a box for every need.  Different types of boxes include  wardrobe boxes, small and  large mirror boxes, file boxes, dish pack boxes, and regular boxes anywhere from 1 ½ to 6 cubic feet.

You want to make sure you get plenty of tape to tape up the top and bottom of all boxes.  Depending on the number and size of the boxes you are using to move, you will have to get an estimate of how much tape you will use. Make sure you buy good quality tape, or else your box may break and you valuable and precious belongings will be everywhere.  Fragile items require special care. For these items, you may need bubble wrap.  Bubble wrap comes in many different quantities. Small bubbles are good for glass items like dishes and knick-knacks. Big bubbles are good for larger items like mirrors and pictures.

To have an organized move, you should clearly label each box. Moving labels are helpful because they stand out as opposed to regular markers. It helps to know which room each box belongs in.  You may also want to assign a priority system to each box.  For example, you would need plates and cups, but you may not need the toaster for a few days.  The more organized the better.

It is also important to cover your furniture while you move.  If your items   are going into a truck, there is a possibility that it may get dirty or rained on.  You can use mattress covers and sofa or chair covers.  Another tool that movers use is shrink wrap which tightly covers the contents so they do not get damaged during the moving process.

The best place to start is with self examination. Yes, the area that will make the largest impact on your facility starts with the manager. Listed below are some ideas that may help improve your skills as a self storage manager.

They are as follows:

1. Learn to become a pro-active problem solver.

The New Year is a great time to improve your offensive game. If you know something is likely to escalate, like a perpetually icy patch of sidewalk or a customer who is always late, look for solutions right away. Take the initiative before a problem develops.

2. Always put yourself in your customers’ shoes.

Self storage managers are constantly faced with customers who are dealing with emotionally charged, stressful situations. Try to keep this in mind and cut your customers some slack if they are a little out of sorts or even rude. We all know what it’s like to be stressed out.

3. Write down and track your professional goals.

Whether you want to increase your facility’s retail sales or improve occupancy at your site, set some specific self storage related goals.

4. Make professional contacts.

Join groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau—they can be great resources for networking. Talk to managers at competing self storage facilities, too. They may be able to send customers your way when they do not have the specific products or  storage unit sizes available to serve these clients themselves.

5. Set a specific goal for each day.

Big goals are often reached after completing a series of smaller steps. Daily goals are easy to set and are especially satisfying as you check them off at the end of the business day.

6. Strive to become a better listener.

One of the easiest steps in improving your listening skills starts by resolving to listen more than you talk. Your customers will appreciate your attentiveness and may reward your listening efforts with a referral or two. You’ll be surprised at what you can learn when you stop and listen!

7. Invest in yourself.

Do you want to move up the corporate ladder at your self storage company? Maybe you’d like to become a Certified Self Storage Manager (CSSM)? Find out what steps you need to take and make a list to follow. Then, check off your progress everyday as you move closer to meeting your goals.

8. Do something just for yourself each day.

You can’t be a great self storage manager, if you’re all business all the time.Resolve to take a little time for yourself each day. Read a book, talk with a friend, or take a moment to laugh at the end of the day—you’ll be a better self storage manager for it!

Strong customer service based on the Golden Rule is the credo we live and work by. .  Coming from those regulations, we maintain our company standards, to provide for you in every way you would deserve and desire to be accommodated and protected.  This includes drive up all weather, walk in all weather, humidity monitored and heated and cooled units.  All of which are situated behind a one thousand pound, state of the art, high security, iron gate, through which only our tenants can enter.  Accessible by an eight digit individualized pass code which is unique to each tenant.

You may find a few other places to store your belongings around town that are a bit lower priced.  Be sure to look at the recording devices at those locations.  Can you see each building?  Can you see each aisle way?  Can you see behind each building?  Can you see the ends of all of those buildings?  Is there a camera situated to view each entry way?  What about the office doors and the inner units of the temperature controlled units?  Are there sufficient lights all around the property?  We must remember that for nearly six months out of the year we have less and less day light after five o’clock.  Will you feel comfortable with the lighting provided?  Some of these questions may seem redundant; however, they will not come to mind until after the fact.  Be prepared going in.  Make sure you are asking the right questions when comparing storage facilities for your precious memoirs.

Many of us don’t have the benefit of a basement in our house.  Nor do we have an attic, per see, that can maintain or protect our precious belongings of days gone past from the weather and natures disobedient and fickle behavior.  There are so very many things that we cannot  bear  to part with, from that one hundred year old wedding gown of our Great-Grandmother’s to those recorders and kazoos from kindergarten that we want never to part with.  The shoulder pads from our son or daughters first game to the mascot or cheerleading outfit.  Lest we forget the love letters we will never let go of.  These are the items that we are going to want to be sure are very well preserved.

Haven’t we all have heard at least one time in our live?  ”We get what we pay for.”  Let’s make our parents proud, and show them that we did listen to one thing they tried to teach us in life.  Let’s make our money count!

Sara Beth decided to take a good look at what she wanted out of life.  She thought of the things she loved and the things she dreamed of.  She realized she was too young to just settle for anything.

One thing was certain.  Sara Beth had talent.  She had been singing since the age of six, she learned to play the piano at the age of eight, and was learning the guitar by the time she was 10.  She especially loved gospel and country music.  Sara Beth had been singing at her church every Sunday since she was 12, and has performed at all of the county fairs in Southern California.

After contemplating returning to college, she looked into colleges where she could pursue her love of country music Nashville, she wanted to be as close as she could to  Music City USA, Nashville, TN.

Sara Beth applied to Belmont University and to MTSU’s School of Music.  She was accepted at both, but MTSU’s School of Music was more affordable.   MTSU is located in Murfreesboro Nashville. After she received her letter of acceptance, there was only one thing left to do, pack up everything she owned and hit the road.  She gathered up every instrument she owned and every ounce of courage she had in her, and headed across the country to Murfreesboro, TN.

It was over a twenty-hour drive with all the stops and breaks she took.  She made the drive completely on her own, with Reba singing loudly through the U-Haul and plenty of caffeine in her Starbuck’s latte.  She hit the interstate vigorously and vowed never to return to Southern California.

Somewhere along the way, Sara Beth realized that the contents of her U-Haul would never fit into her dorm room at MTSU.  Therefore, before she could unload and fix up her room in the School of Music’s Poland Hall, she was going to have to decide on getting a storage unit to put most of her instruments and many of her boxes in.

After deciding it was to unsafe to research this idea while driving, she decided to wait until she reached Murfreesboro, TN to research the idea a little further and pick out  a storage unit.  She knew there had to be plenty in the area.

She arrived in Murfreesboro, TN at 9pm on a Sunday night.  Exhaustion had set in; hunger was approaching, and she hoped she had not made a big mistake.  She pulled into a Waffle House, with her laptop and her cell phone, and decided to eat a hot meal and find a storage unit so she could unload some of the stuff in this 27ft. truck.

Sara Beth searched for storage units in Murfreesboro, TN within a close distance to MTSU.  She found eight of them.  She was going to do a little price comparison but to her surprise, the first four facilities she called were closed and all she got was an answering machine.  Those were the ones closest to MTSU and it looks like they were crossed off the list.

Sara Beth finally got a hold of a real person who could help her.  The storage facility was fairly close to MTSU, and it was right next to Wal-Mart.

The storage consultant moved her right in over the phone, gave her the personal access code to get into the gate, and charged her for the month’s rent.  It all took less than 10 minutes.

Customer service is one of the favorite parts of my job, and I feel very fortunate to come in contact with all of our tenants. Each customer that comes in gets greeted with a smile, which is a very important step in a first impression.  Nobody wants to come in after having a bad day, and talk to someone who could care less about them or their situation.  This is what makes the managers at StorPlace Self Storage so different.  I can honestly say that each and every one of my coworkers are just as friendly as myself, they always have their ears open so they can listen to each tenant’s unique situation.

Recently, there was a fire at one of the apartment complexes across the street from our facility.  We called them once we heard the news and asked if we could help. As it turns out we could,  so we got them set up for a 10’x15’ storage unit that same day, free of charge.  We also donated 3 small and 3 medium boxes to each victim of the fire that stopped by our office,  so that way they could try and salvage what was left of their stuff.  News of our donation unit was shown on the major networks in Nashville, and we had donations coming in from all over.  The unit filled quickly with all kinds of items, including: toys, clothes, kitchen appliances and utensils, a TV and DVD player, and even a kitchen table.  The fact that these people who lost everything could just come right across the street to our facility and begin piecing their lives back together was a start in the right direction.

It doesn’t matter what the occasion, the golden rule is, “treat people the way you would want to be treated,” and in our field StorPlace is definitely taking that rule to heart.  We try our hardest to keep our units and our property clean, well lit, and safe. Identify the items that you are going to be storing. Buy storage  boxes and packing supplies such as tape and bubble wrap, packing peanuts and furniture covers ahead of time to make packing and storing less stressful. Smaller boxes should be used to pack heavier, denser items so that you don’t over pack. Do not pack any box heavier than you can carry easily. Remember- that you’re going to be moving these boxes and you don’t want to break your back. StorPlace Self Storage carries boxes in several different sizes as well as commonly used packing supplies such as tape, furniture covers, bubble wrap.  It is important to use boxes and not plastic bags to store your belongings. Boxes when packed properly are sturdier than bags .Also, they are stackable, taking up less floor space that can be used for bigger furniture items. Also, plastic bags can trap humidity and cause mildew to grow on the items inside.  Another good tip is to overestimate the amount of tape you will need. Nothing is more frustrating than running out of tape and having to make a run to the store for more just as you get into the groove of packing moving boxes. Let’s start with the kitchen. The best items to start with in the kitchen are the glasses and plates. This should not have to be said but you never know. Please make sure your dishes and glasses are very clean before you pack them especially if you are going to be storing these items in a storage unit or storage closet or garage. First things first , go to StorPlace Self Storage and pick up a kitchen box kit that includes 10 small boxes ,7 medium moving boxes 25 feet of bubble wrap and a 10 pound bundle of news print(without print). This will get you moving in the right direction no pun intended. You may also want to pick up a dish packing kit and a glass packing kit. These two kits will fit into the small boxes that are included in the kitchen kit so no need to buy any extra boxes unless you want to pick up a few large boxes for large kitchen appliances. So again starting with the glasses, you will notice that the glass packing kit has some small foam inserts. Put your glasses one at a time into the foam inserts and the put them neatly in the cardboard grid that comes with the glass packing kit that goes in the small box. Make sure to fill up this box all the way to the top so if you have small glasses or if you don’t have enough glasses to fill up the kit completely then use the newsprint that came with the Kitchen box kit to fill the empty space left in the small box. If you do not fill the box completely ,then it can case to box to collapse during the move or during storage. Repeat these steps for the dish kit as it works the same way as the glass packing kit. If you have any of the foam inserts left after you finish the kitchen , make sure you hold onto them because they can become very useful for small knick knacks and for screws to furniture etc. later in your move.

Now once you have finished your glasses and dishes, let’s start on the pots and pans. Again a reminder to make sure that the pots and pans are extremely clean before you pack them. Start with the medium size box and put your biggest pots first and then put a layer of newsprint on top of the pot and then put the next size smaller pot inside of the bigger pot. You will have lots of extra space in this box so try putting some smaller odd ball items that are in your kitchen in this box to fill in the empty space. After you get this box full then fill up any small gaps with the newsprint and then tape up the box.

Next let’s move to the kitchen appliances.  The coffee maker is the probably one of the most important item in the kitchen (at least it is to a lot of people); so get a medium box, take the coffee make and pull out the coffee pot and wad up some newsprint and fill the coffee pot as full as you can and the wrap the coffee pot with bubble wrap(included in the kitchen box kit) and then place in back into the coffee maker if possible and then wrap the coffee maker with bubble wrap and place in into the box and again fill up the rest of the box with small items and newsprint and tape it up.

The New Year is a great time to improve your offensive game. If you know something is likely to escalate, like a perpetually icy patch of sidewalk or a customer who is always late, look for solutions right away. Take the initiative before a problem develops.

2. Always put yourself in your customers’ shoes.

Self storage managers are constantly faced with customers who are dealing with emotionally charged, stressful situations. Try to keep this in mind and cut your customers some slack if they are a little out of sorts or even rude. We all know what it’s like to be stressed out. 3. Write down and track your professional goals.

Whether you want to increase your facility’s retail sales or improve occupancy at your site, set some specific self storage related goals.

1.       Keep items together.

If you have a favorite set up for your fireplace mantle or a great table, setting keep all of those items together in one box or bin to ease your set up for next year.

2.       Put together a “Holiday Tool Kit”.

Just make a small bin that has all the tools you need to set up. For example: scissors, wire cutters, tape, glue, pack of batteries, and some replacement light bulbs. This little step will keep you from running around looking for these items, thus saving time.

3.       Clearly label.

However you sort your decorations whether by room, size, shape or type, make sure you clearly label each box. The best option is to use clear plastic bins and slip a piece of paper in the end that you can read. Plastic bins will be much more sturdy and better protect your decorations than cardboard boxes.

4.       Wind those wires.

Take the time to carefully wind and bind up your holiday lights. Then place them in a clearly labeled box (we carry small, medium, large and extra large boxes for your convenience). This will greatly reduce your frustration level next year.

5.       Wrap up ornaments.

Flat ornaments can be placed in a box with layers of newsprint (one of our many packing supplies) in between. We also have every size of storage boxes. Round ornaments will fit nicely back in their original boxes or you can buy specially made protective ornament boxes. If an ornament is too large such as a tree topper, it may have to be stored separately.

6.       Reusable.

Buying reusable decorations will really cut down on your holiday budget in the long run as well as save you time and effort. Artificial garland, wreaths, and even trees are much more economical. If you miss that wonderful holiday smell you can find many air fresheners that will fill the void. Storing these items in their original box or a special wreath or tree box is best.

7.       Label location.

Can’ remember where it goes? Before you put away decorations tag them with where they go. For example, label candle sticks “mantle” or ribbon “door knobs”.

Moving is a very stressful. Even though the reason may be a positive one, it requires so much planning and a lot of hard work. Our staging consultant was excellent, but in truth, she had no mercy about the salability of our house. In fact,  decluttering was not nearly enough. She insisted that we move all of our large furniture into storage. In the meanwhile, we had to move into one of Nashville’s hotels. She said this furniture that we found comfortable and quite acceptable looked old and ragged. She insisted that we go rent brand new furniture to put in the den. Of course, this added a significant additional expense to our moving cost, for which we were unprepared.We had the cost of the staging consultant, rented furniture, hotel, and furniture storage.

My husband loves to go fishing in the spring, and it is truly his way to relax. She took one look at our beloved fishing boat and trailer and said that his rust-eaten, hideous boat and trailer must be gotten rid of. In order to save costs and still maintain convenience, we looked at several options including a POD, a marina slip, and boat storage. However, all things considered, the boat storage option at StorPlace Self Storage represented the most economical and feasible, solution. The POD, while slightly more expensive,  would have cluttered the yard, and we would have been locked into a lease that was not month to month, and this is what we were trying to get away from. The boat storage option was economical and convenient. This provided an easy and happy solution for my diehard fisherman who can’t wait to hit those early morning bass, crappie, and bream.

So we are now onto our personal task of packing up storage boxes in the garage, children’s baby toys and riding vehicles, and all of the excess athletic balls and shoes that we have accumulated for years. St. Valentine’s Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14 by many people throughout the world. In the English-speaking countries, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine’s cards, presenting flowers, or offering confectionery. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of “valentines”. Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th century America, where many Valentine cards are now general greeting cards rather than declarations of love, was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States. It’s considered one of the Hallmark holidays.

The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas. The association estimates that, in the US, men spend on average twice as much money as women.

Saint Valentine

Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. The Valentines honored on February 14 are Valentine of Rome (Valentinus presb. m. Romae) and Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae). Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome who suffered martyrdom about AD 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. His relics are at the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome and at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland.

Valentine of Terni became bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) about AD 197 and is said to have been killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian. He is also buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location than Valentine of Rome. His relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni (Basilica di San Valentino).

The Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks of a third saint named Valentine who was mentioned in early martyrologies under date of February 14. He was martyred in Africa with a number of companions, but nothing more is known about him.

No romantic elements are present in the original early medieval biographies of either of these martyrs. By the time a Saint Valentine became linked to romance in the fourteenth century, distinctions between Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni were utterly lost.

In the 1969 revision of the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints, the feast day of Saint Valentine on February 14 was removed from the General Roman Calendar and relegated to particular (local or even national) calendars for the following reason: “Though the memorial of Saint Valentine is ancient, it is left to particular calendars, since, apart from his name, nothing is known of Saint Valentine except that he was buried on the Via Flaminia on February 14.” The feast day is still celebrated in Balzan (Malta) where relics of the saint are claimed to be found, and also throughout the world by Traditionalist Catholics who follow the older, pre-Vatican II calendar.

The Early Medieval acta of either Saint Valentine were excerpted by Bede and briefly expounded in Legenda Aurea. According to that version, St Valentine was persecuted as a Christian and interrogated by Roman Emperor Claudius II in person. Claudius was impressed by Valentine and had a discussion with him, attempting to get him to convert to Roman paganism in order to save his life. Valentine refused and tried to convert Claudius to Christianity instead. Because of this, he was executed. Before his execution, he is reported to have performed a miracle by healing the blind daughter of his jailer.

Legenda Aurea still providing no connections whatsoever with sentimental love, appropriate lore has been embroidered in modern times to portray Valentine as a priest who refused an unattested law attributed to Roman Emperor Claudius II, allegedly ordering that young men remain single. The Emperor supposedly did this to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius found out about this, he had Valentine arrested and thrown in jail. In an embellishment to The Golden Legend provided by American Greetings, Inc. to History.com and widely repeated, on the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first “valentine” himself, addressed to a young girl variously identified as his beloved, as the jailer’s daughter whom he had befriended and healed, or both. It was a note that read “From your Valentine.”

Now that you know a little more about climate control there are a few other things to learn about it.  To have true climate control, you also need to control the humidity.  Living in Middle  Tennessee Nashville in the summer you can certainly see why the humidity is  an issue.  A lot of storage facilities describe themselves as having “climate control,” but in all reality, they are using the same kind of heating and air conditioning as you would in your home.  Most facilities have an HVAC system, which stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.  While these systems are fine for short term storage, having a unit that is climate controlled aka temperature and humidity controlled is  important  if you are planning on storing for an extended period of time, i.e. over a year.  There must be  good air circulation and ventilation in your facility regardless of whether or not it is a true climate controlled unit. You can check this by looking around the ceiling of your storage unit.  Is there enough room for air to pass freely into the hall or into other units, or is there a vent directly into your storage unit?  If there is no space for air to circulate freely, you may want to consider another facility.

When you plan on storing for an extended period of time, you will need to periodically come back to take care of your belongings.  Wipe down mirrors or pictures; check for any intrusions like pests or water, and remove dust.
